PCs would lower price of gas by 10 cents a litre: Ford

A Progressive Conservative government would reduce gasoline prices by 10 cents a litre, Leader Doug Ford says.

It’s a promise that requires lowering fuel taxes, scrapping cap-and-trade, and fighting the federal government possibly all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada on carbon pricing, Ford said.

“We all know that paying for gas is not a luxury, it’s not a perk, it is an absolute necessity,” Ford said during a campaign stop at a Mississauga gas station.

Ford pointed to the example of Vancouver, where he said carbon pricing has pushed up the cost of gasoline to more than $1.60 a litre, the highest in North America.

“And with the Liberals or NDP in charge, we know that things will only get worse – higher prices at the pump,” Ford said. “If the Liberals or NDP get the chance, gas prices will soar. They will hit $2 a litre in Ontario by next summer.”

Ford said he believes he can afford this commitment, not layoff any public servants, and still balance the books by the end of a government term, usually four years.

The Kathleen Wynne government’s cap-and-trade program adds 4.3 cents to the per litre cost of gasoline which, when HST is charged on top of it, comes to 4.6 cents a litre.

The PCs say the average family will immediately save an average of $285 a year by scrapping the cap-and-trade program, which also impacts home heating and other expenses.

When asked about the hit to the government’s bottom line by this promise, Ford said he expects the economy will see a boost in activity as a result of cheaper gas prices.

It’s also not clear whether the province could successfully stave off a federal carbon tax as mandated by the Justin Trudeau government.

Ontario Liberal Party spokesman Drew Davidson said that “whether Doug Ford believes in climate change or not, carbon pricing is coming under the federal government. Doug Ford and the Conservatives don’t understand that the only way to responsibly fight climate change is by putting a price on pollution.”
